Braking resistors are the most popular type of high power resistors used in electric motor drives in modern industry. The main applications are found in the transport [railways, aviation, bus industry], construction and maritime industry.
Braking resistor is used when braking electrical machines. Such machines are driven by motors controlled by frequency converters - inverters. This allows for a smooth and dynamic speed change. During dynamic braking this system is working as an electric generator and returns the current to the power network, which is able to accept it up to its specific value. Above this value, the braking energy must be discharged in a different way, and for this purpose a braking resistor is applied, which discharges this energy, converting it into heat.
Most often, the power of such a braking resistor constitutes a small part of the inverter power, due to the fact that it is activated for a short time. In a result the braking resistor powers are relatively small compared to the power of starting resistors.
